Whilst obviously the man took pleasure in accosting people who passed through his gate with out paying, something like the troll under the bridge (very fitting, the troll at the end of the fairy glen), so you might think that to avail himself of satisfaction it is quite plausible that he would spend far too long looking out of the window waiting. But then again, there is the quite plausible option that he had applied for a grant which was absolutely essential for maintaining the countryside the money form which he then used to implement very high tech sensors and imaging technology so not only can he enjoy having a go, but he can then record his greatest successes and then watch them back on cold dark winter evenings bringing himself an inner warming glow of malice.
